SVC Drops CHE Playoff Game to Penn State Behrend

April 7, 2008
The Polar Bearcats dropped their final game of the season in a playoff match up against Penn State Behrend. In spite of leading for most of the game and holding a one goal edge at the end of both the first and second periods, the final 7-4 score did not indicate how tight the contest was for more than 45 minutes of play. Adam Petrovich opened the match with a power play goal for SVC in the first period on assists by Joe Manning and Dave Glunt. In the second frame goals came in rapid succession. Each time Saint Vincent scored PSB quickly rallied to draw back to a one goal deficit. A tally by D.J.
Beitel and two by Joe Manning kept SVC ahead by a 4-3 going into the third. But the Lions started scoring mid way through the period and ended the game as the victor. Saint Vincent was out shot 46 to 39 during the game.

SVC Gains Final CHE Playoff Spot:
Defeats WVU

February 16, 2008
Saint Vincent hosted the WVU Mountaineers last Sunday and skated to a 6-5 victory behind several outstanding efforts and smart plays by key members of the squad. The offensive thrust was lead by Joe Manning who recorded four points, including a pair of assists and the game winning goal. Not to be outdone, Adam Petrovich notched two power play goals, while Captain Chris McDonald collected a goal and an assist and Dave Glunt had a game high four helpers in the contest. Scoring also came from the blue lineas Pat "The Beard" Bates one
timed a perfect cross ice feed from D.J. Beitel behind the WVU goalie. Bates and defensive partner Tony Duco each had two assists.

Defensively the Polar Bearcats saw strong work turned in by Duco and Bates as they lead all players with a plus 4 mark. SVC was plagued by penalties in the second and third periods and strong penalty killing by forwards Phil Ivkovich, Dave Ulishney and Chris Hilling was matched with efforts from Tim Legath and Jordan Bishop. Seeing his first game action in more than a year, Joe Ring held his ground in the nets and racked up his first win of the campaign.

SVC received good news as Pitt dropped both of its contests. Coupled with the Polar Bearcats win two week-ends ago against South Division Champion Penn State Altoona, the Pitt losses clinched the final CHE playoff birth for the Green and Gold. First round playoff action will be against the high scoring Penn State Behrend team. Behrend beat SVC earlier in the season by a one goal margin.

SVC Tightens Up Playoff Race:
Defeats 1st Place Penn State Altoona

January 29, 2008
The Polar Bearcats hosted South Division leading Penn State Altoona this past Sunday and walked off with an exciting 5-4 win behind a 37 save effort by Rich Sadlowski. Five different players tallied single goals for SVC as Dave Glunt, Jim Mandel, Chris McDonald and Tim Legath put pucks behind the Blue and White goaltender before freshman D.J. Beitel notched the game winner. To add to the scoring parade, Joe Manning, Adam Petrovich, Mario Siard and Jim Mandel all collected two assists. D.J. Beitel and Tony Duco also
had helpers.

SVC built a 4-1 lead on two quick strike goals in the second period, but Altoona regrouped after a time out and closed the second frame down only 4-3. Saint Vincent made it 5-3 on what would prove to be the eventual game winner by D.J. Beitel. The Lions made the game exciting to the end by scoring on a power play and, even though down a player with less than seconds to go in the contest put two quick shots on SVC goalie Rich Sadlowski who made the saves for the "W".

Saint Vincent must now wait for the other teams to finish the CHE schedule to find out if a playoff spot is in the waiting. Until then two games remain against Neuman College and West Virginia University.

Inconsistency and Injuries Plague Polar Bearcats

January 23, 2008
After a brief two game winning streak, SVC was unable to generate sufficient offense and in spite of out shooting its opponents in most of the periods played last weekend, dropped games to both Cal and IUP.

In the Friday night match against the top ranked Cal team, The Polar Bearcats battled well into the third period and was down by only one goal at 3-2 on a first period tally by Jim Mandel and a second period power play goal by Pat Bates. But a first period injury to Phil
Ivkovich on a charge that was not called by the official and a strained groin muscle on first line forward Adam Petrovich forced SVC to juggle its lines. The loss of depth and two power play scores by Cal made the final look far worse than how close the game actually was with an 8-4 decision. Chris McDonald and Joe Manning also put pucks in the net. SVC ended the contest out shooting Cal by a 36 to 35 margin.

Sunday's opponent, IUP saw St. Vincent fall to a similar fate. The first period ended gridlocked at 0-0 as the IUP net minder stifled the Green and Gold on several prime scoring chances. They proved to be key saves as SVC played most of the second period in its own end forcing Bucky Holt to make 20 saves on 25 shots. Down by a 5-1 margin, with the only goal a nifty backhand from Matt Domyancic, it looked as if SVC would make a strong effort to draw the score close. Again the IUP goalie came up big and although the shots ended in favor of SVC in the 3rd by a 19 to 13 margin, a lone goal came from Dave Glunt while IUP pumped in 5 more. Freshman Jim Franek saw his first game action to finish the contest in the final minutes of the game. Neither Phil Ivkovich or Adam Petrovich were available due to injuries.

The losses tighten the race for the last playoff spot and makes the Penn State Altoona game this Sunday a critical match for SVC.

St. Vincent Starts New Semester with Win Over UPJ

January 13, 2008
If one had watched the last meeting between SVC and UPJ, they might had suggested that UPJ would dominate and win again. This game was much different though, as SVC has been playing much better hockey lately than they did earlier in the season. Another difference in this game was the addition of two new SVC players, Pat Bates and Mario Siard. Mario wasted no time netting his first points as a Bearcat. Mario ended the game with a goal and an assist. Bates also brought more stability on the blueline with added toughness, as Bates' phsyical
presence could be felt all over the ice. The outcome was a 4-3 shoot-out win. Goaltender Rich Sadlowski was brilliant in the shoot-out, which allowed the Bearcats to win. Joe Manning and Matt Domyancic also scored, while DJ Beitel, Tim Legath, and Dave Glunt converted on their shoot-out oppurtunies.

The Bearcats now take to the road to play California University on Friday, January 18 at Bladerunners in Bethel Park. St. Vincent has yet to face-off against the Vulcans this season, but with their superb play of late, the game should be exciting.

Polar Bearcats Do Well in CHE All-Star Game

January 13, 2008
The four Polar Bearcat participants in the 2008 CHE All-Star Game turned in strong performances while representing Saint Vincent. Goalie Rich Sadlowski played in the third frame while Tim Legath held a defensive role. Joe Manning scored in the third period while Dave Glunt picking up an assist on the Manning score. Joe also showcased his speed, winning the fastest skater contest and Dave led all forwards in the rapid fire contest by placing 7 goals behind the Penn State Beherend goalkeeper in 30 seconds.

St. Vincent Anxious to Start New Semester

January 11, 2008
After a strong finish to the first semester, St. Vincent is looking to continue their success and catch a playoff spot in the College Hockey East. The Bearcats return home to play Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday, January 13 at 2:00pm at the Delmont Ice Arena. In the last game against UPJ, the Bearcats lost 9-4 after a lackluster second period. Since that game, St. Vincent has played very well and finished the first semester with an impressive 7-2 win over IUP.

After facing off against UPJ, St.Vincent will hit the road to
take on the number 1 ranked team in the Atlantic: California University. The Cal game is on Friday, January 18 at the Bladerunners Ice Rink in Bethel Park at 9:00pm. The Bearcats have yet to face the Vulcans this season, but with the stronger play of late and with the team's two new additions in Pat Bates and Mario Siard, the Cal game promises to host a great amount of entertainment to those in attendance.

Four Bearcats Named to CHE All-Star Team

January 8, 2008
The coaching staff nominated three forwards, two defensemen and a goaltender to the CHE All-Star Team. Selected to play in this year's classic were forwards Joe Manning and Dave Glunt, defenseman Tim Legath, and goaltender Rich Sadlowski. D.J. Beitel and Tony Duco were nominated, but not selected by the CHE staff. It will be the first appearance for Manning, Glunt and Sadlowski while Legath makes his second trip to the game. Glunt was nominated the previous year but was not selected to play.

First Semester Ends with Win over IUP

December 8, 2007
Ending the first semester with a sub-par 2-9-2 record, the Polar Bearcats look forward to a stronger second semester with the return of Pat Bates and newcomer Mario Siard. The added depth should help position the team for a second semester run for a CHE playoff spot after losing a number of extremely close games in the first half of the campaign. The Green and Gold finished on a high note with a strong showing over IUP behind the goaltending of Rich Sadlowski and a 4 goal, first period outburst by the SVC offense.
